Compostable packaging often requires specific conditions to break down that food waste processing facilities may not provide, and mixing them can lead to contamination and improper sorting.
The odd uneaten crust or leftover slice won’t affect your compost. We can still recycle your compostable packaging, but if you find a lot of food waste within this material stream, we recommend a separate recycling service for the bulk of your food waste, to maintain recycling quality and remain cost-effective.
This limit is in place to ensure the quality of the compost produced by your compostable packaging. Otherwise, compost may not be safe or effective for use in soil.
Your compostable packaging should be certified to BS EN 13432, BS EN 14995, ASTM 6400. This information should be available on the specification sheet of the packaging you purchase. They do not have to be made by the same manufacturer.
Compostable materials turn into nutrient-rich soil under composting conditions, which can be used again, whilst biodegradable materials break down naturally over time but not always as completely or beneficially.
