How to set-up your compostable packaging recycling service?

Compostable Packaging
01

Check all the packaging you buy is compliant with BS EN 13432, BS EN 14995, ASTM 6400.

Wheeled bin and sack
02

Order your colour coded compostables bin or sack.

Box vehicle
03

We will collect your compostable packaging from your workplace, using specialist trucks, and will transport them to our Materials Recovery Facility (MRF).

Compost
04

Your compostable packaging is then sent for in-vessel composting, where it is transformed into a peat-free PAS 100 compost to be used as a soil improver. Peat-free compost displaces the need to extract and harvest peat-based compost, which contributes to climate change.

Office Supplies Website
05

You can even purchase back your compost to use on your site through our office supplies site!

Compostable packaging questions answered

  • Compostable materials turn into nutrient-rich soil under composting conditions, which can be used again, whilst biodegradable materials break down naturally over time but not always as completely or beneficially.

  • Your compostable packaging should be certified to BS EN 13432, BS EN 14995, ASTM 6400. This information should be available on the specification sheet of the packaging you purchase. They do not have to be made by the same manufacturer.

  • This limit is in place to ensure the quality of the compost produced by your compostable packaging. Otherwise, compost may not be safe or effective for use in soil.

  • The odd uneaten crust or leftover slice won’t affect your compost. We can still recycle your compostable packaging, but if you find a lot of food waste within this material stream, we recommend a separate recycling service for the bulk of your food waste, to maintain recycling quality and remain cost-effective.

  • Compostable packaging often requires specific conditions to break down that food waste processing facilities may not provide, and mixing them can lead to contamination and improper sorting.
