Our green thought this week is to get our homes ready for winter, but what exactly does that mean?
Well it doesn’t have to mean getting the tool kit out to start replacing your windows and doors, there are a few simple things you can do that will make a big difference. And you’ll probably notice a common theme amongst them (and it’s not just that they’ll all help save you money).
- Get your water tank(s) a coat – it doesn’t have to be stylish and trendy, but by giving it an extra layer of insulation, you’ll prevent your boiler from working too hard to keep the water warm. In cold weather, cold water tanks can freeze so insulating will help prevent frost damage.
- Seal up gaps in doors and windows. There are several ways you can do this, either by using gun applied sealants, compression seals or low friction/wiper seals.
- Insulate your loft. Heat rises which means a huge amount can escape through un-insulated roofs.
- Insulate pipes – insulating pipes will help to prevent frost damage and freezing.
- Bleed your radiators – chances are they’ve been off over the summer so get rid of the air bubbles now so they’ll be ready for you.
So there you go, 5 simple tips to help keep you warm in the winter that don’t cost the earth and you don’t need to be a diy expert to do.
