Landfill to Nature Reserve

Thursday 1st December 2016

BPR Group are 100% zero-to-landfill but unfortunately not all companies can make the same claim. Although there are measures in place to reduce the number of landfill sites across the country, in some instances the damage has already been done. But that’s not to say there isn’t a silver lining. The Essex Wildlife Trust at Thurrock Thameside Nature Park has a stunning nature park of 120 acres which will eventually grow to 845 acres. Essex Wildlife Trust protects over 8,200 acres of land on 87 nature reserves.

Thurrock Thameside Nature park boasts great birdwatching, 360 degree views of the park from their visitor centre and a natural play area. A portion of land previously given over to waste has been given back to nature. The park is important for a huge variety of animals including owls, water voles, harvest mice, skylarks and bees. Local cattle also graze on the grassland throughout the year. You can find out more about Essex Wildlife Trust on their website: http://www.essexwt.org.uk (Opens in a new tab)

Whilst a huge proportion of historic landfills were located in Essex, these are increasingly being converted to parks similar to that at Thurrock. You can find out more about historic landfills using the Environment Agency’s handy map  (Opens in a new tab).
