Global Recycling Day: Celebrating Recycling Heroes
Learn how we're inspiring Recycling Heroes this Global Recycling Day through engaging events, interactive games and educational initiatives.
Global Recycling Day took place on the 18th of March 2025. It is an annual event serving as a reminder that what we often consider waste, is actually a valuable resource. Recycling plays a vital role in tackling climate change and environmental degradation. This year’s theme, “Become a Recycling Hero,” honours the individuals, communities, and initiatives leading the charge in recycling efforts.
At Recorra, our Sustainability Team hosted 4 awareness stands and a recycling webinar to showcase how recycling supports a more sustainable planet and a greener future. Recorra are committed to making recycling education both fun and engaging for our customers.
Check out what our Sustainability Consultants were up to on Global Recycling Day below!
Our Graduate Sustainability Consultants, Jamie and Dan, visited Ropemaker with our famous Spin the Wheel Recycling Game!
If you landed on the chocolate segment, you won a tasty treat! Instead of throwing away the wrapper, we encouraged our customers to recycle it with Recorra! We educated our customers that Recorra collects snack wrappers and flexible plastics from businesses through our Circular Box service. Recorra sends these materials to our processing partner, Stormboard, where they are transformed into a plywood alternative, a sustainable material used in furniture and construction, helping to drive a circular economy.
Spin the wheel, land on a recycling question, and test your knowledge! One of this year’s key questions was:
What’s the biggest cause of fires in the waste industry?
Can You Guess?
If you guessed “Batteries,” you’re absolutely right!
Our Sustainability Consultants, Emily and Ty, set up an interactive awareness stand at 20 Fenchurch Street. They involved customers in games to promote environmental sustainability, by teaching them how to reduce contamination. One highlight was our bean bag game, which taught participants how to correctly segregate waste through understanding what belongs in each waste stream. This is essential for transitioning from a linear waste model to a circular economy, where items can be regenerated, not discarded.
Another crowd favourite was our recycling golf game, which was very popular. With three different starting points, players answered recycling questions on their way to becoming Recycling Champions. As a fun incentive, we handed out cupcakes to those who completed the games successfully.
Hannah, one of our Sustainability Consultants, set up a stand at the Post Maker Building to educate customers on the recycling process. She mentioned how office waste recycling through Recorra’s Commercial Waste Collection Services contributes to a more sustainable future. As part of Recorra’s zero-to-landfill policy, Hannah explained how our general waste collections are transported by barge, removing 100,000 heavy vehicle movements from London’s roads each year. Our waste partner, Cory Environmental, incinerates the waste, with the resulting ash used in Tarmac for roads, and the leftover energy fed back into the national grid. Hannah further explained all our commercial mixed recycling collections are sent to our Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) for sorting, baling, and sent to our processors to be recycled into new products. Recorra keeps 98% of our materials within the UK for recycling and 100% in Northern Europe. This gives our customers complete transparency and trust that your waste is being recycled properly and will not wash up on the shores of low- and middle-income countries.
Our Sustainability Consultant, Tia, hosted a pop-up stand at the Bank of England, focusing on global recycling trends. Using Recorra’s Bins Around the World game, Tia educated clients on which countries lead the way, and which lag in the waste industry. Participants who answered correctly received eco-friendly freebies from Recorra’s Sustainable Office Supplies range, including pencils made from recycled newspaper, pens made from recycled materials, and seed bombs.
Tia further elaborated on Recorra’s CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) initiatives, such as our beach cleanups and volunteer days with our food waste charity partner, Plan Zheroes. These events help our clients understand the impact their recycling behaviour can have on the environment. By participating, customers not only contribute to environmental sustainability but also give back to their communities, fostering a strong sense of responsibility and connection.
Our Graduate Sustainability Consultant, Tara, hosted a Simpler Recycling webinar to help clients navigate the new recycling legislation that took effect on March 31, 2025. Tara guided businesses through the necessary changes and highlighted the benefits these adjustments will bring, explaining that the Simpler Recycling Legislation is a crucial step in transitioning from a linear economy to a more sustainable, circular one.
Recorra offers a range of valuable resources, including comprehensive guides designed to help your business navigate the legislation with confidence. Find out more about how Recorra can help your business adjust to Simpler Recycling here.
Global Recycling Day 2025 was a fantastic opportunity to engage and educate our clients about the importance of recycling and how small changes can lead to a significant positive impact on the environment.
