Carbon Catch-up: BusinessGreen's Net Zero Festival and Recorra's Greenhouse Gas Inventory

As we near the end of October, it's time for another carbon catch-up!

First off, I’m sharing some selfies from the BusinessGreen Net Zero Festival (despite being Gen Z, I still haven’t mastered the art of smoothly taking a selfie…) Huge shoutout to all the amazing people I had the pleasure of meeting:

Alex Cropley from Low Carbon Materials (LCM), who’s pioneering carbon-negative asphalt (we first crossed paths at ResetConnect this summer!), Nikhit Nanjungud from ACT Group, the go-to expert on REGOs, Guillaume Rivaud whose passion for conservation led me to join WWF after telling me about the number of rangers shot by poachers weekly, and Martin Louey from the Rail Delivery Group, who introduced me to their new carbon calculator.

Did you know that neither Google Maps nor Citymapper gives you straightforward rail distances?

It’s a game-changer for carbon accountants and footprinters since calculating rail travel emissions is trickier than it seems. Did you know that neither Google Maps nor Citymapper gives you straightforward rail distances? We ended up calculating distances based on travel time and average speeds—just one example of how carbon footprinting often descends into fiddly data manipulation issues.

I’ll be heading back to the conference later today to hear from Simon Reeve, who is one of my personal heroes. His autobiography is on the bookcase of my childhood bedroom.

Recorra's Greenhouse Gas Audit

In other news, the net zero team at Recorra is on the verge of submitting our full greenhouse gas inventory to the auditors! This means that in just a few months, Recorra will have a publicly accessible, fully verified carbon footprint across all three scopes. Not only will this milestone enhance our corporate transparency, but it also serves as a crucial internal tool to systematically reduce emissions as we work toward our net zero goals.

Renewable Fuels on the Horizon

On that note, we’ve been hard at work on an exciting new project aimed at reducing emissions from our direct diesel combustion by experimenting with renewable fuels. There’s a lot more to announce in the new year, so stay tuned!

We all have a part to play in tackling climate change by reducing our carbon emissions.

At Recorra, we are committed to having a diesel-free fleet by 2040 and helping our customers reduce waste.

By expanding our electric vehicle and cargo bike fleet, combined with expanding our repair and reuse arm, we’re reducing our customers’ emissions. Explore our Sustainability Stocktake to find out how we intend to each Net Zero.
